Watch TWI Webinar: Joining & Recycling for EV Battery Packs

Tue, 27 June, 2023

TWI’s Core Research Programme (CRP) recently held the second webinar in its series, focused on the CRP-funded project ‘Joining and Recycling for Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery Packs’. The recording of the webinar is now available to watch online.

The event was well attended by TWI Industrial Members from many different fields, including aerospace, electronics, sensors, automotive and rail.

During the webinar, we were joined by Richard March from Rolls-Royce plc, who is also an industrial mentor for the project. Richard gave a brief presentation highlighting the importance of the project to Rolls-Royce’s interest in electric flight and zero-carbon emissions. He also emphasised the significance of recycling and dismantling battery packs due to their limited lifespan.

Richard said “This CRP project is really useful. A lot work has been done to optimise the process parameters of each of the joining processes, with the back-to-back comparison between different processes...”. He further added, “The project has developed a number of new testing methods that are going to be really useful for standardising battery joint testing in the future”.

In addition, our expert, Dr Abbasi Gandhi from TWI’s Thermal Processing Technologies Section, gave an insightful presentation. He discussed the latest advancements in joining and recycling technologies for EV batteries, as well as joining methods, joining trials, and testing of EV dummy cells. He also explained the future of EV battery manufacturing and the role of joining and recycling in creating a more sustainable transportation sector.
