TWI PhD student and artificial intelligence researcher, Mengyuan Zhang was given the ‘best presentation’ award at the Measurement, Quality, Data Science (MQDS) international congress.
The congress was held from 5-7 June 2023 in Bordeaux, France, with Mengyuan’s presentation offering details about, ‘Robotic Path Planning using NDT Ultrasonic Data for Autonomous Inspection.’
The presentation provided information related to an ongoing collaboration between TWI and Brunel University, London, and was co-authored by TWI Software Consultant Mark Sutcliffe and TWI Software Engineer Dave Carswell.
Working together, the team achieved a new methodology for using real-time ultrasonic inspection data feedback as a basis for dynamic robot path planning for non-destructive testing (NDT) applications.
The use of inspection data removed the limitations associated with conventional vision systems and also eliminated the requirement for a prior knowledge of the inspected component surface, as is normally the case for NDT deployed factory robot inspection.
Congratulations to Mengyuan and the team and, for more information on the use of robotics technology applied to NDT please see, here.
