TWI Expert to Speak at International Composites Summit

Wed, 16 August, 2023

TWI Consultant, Chris Worrall is due to present at the International Composites Summit (ICS) in Milton Keynes this September.

The summit is being held from 6-7 September, 2023 at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, UK with the theme of, ‘Reinventing the Global Supply Chain to Enable a Sustainable Future.’

Chris will investigate novel composite structures during his talk titled, ‘Making the Next Generation of RTR Pipe Connections a Reality,’ which is due to take place on the Innovation Stage on Wednesday, 6 September between 10am and 10:55am.

At TWI, Chris is responsible for helping solve challenges faced by our Industrial Members in exploiting the full benefits of composite materials in a range of different industries.

He has also been instrumental in delivering non-metallic solutions for the oil and gas industry working with TWI under the umbrella of the Non-Metallic Innovation Centre (NIC), and has played a key role in developing innovative joining technologies.

Chris’ participation shows how TWI experts are helping to lead innovative advancements in a variety of industries.

Also attending the event is TWI composites engineer, Neelmanee Sarin who will be on hand to provide details of the 'ESENSE' project. While autoclaves have been the standard in producing high-quality aerospace composite components, their high cost, lengthy production time, and rigid manufacturing procedures present substantial hurdles. ESENSE is set to overcome these challenges with a versatile, cost-effective, and self-heated out-of-autoclave (OOA) tool. This pioneering solution features advanced thermal management and multiple heating areas to eradicate the need for expensive and energy-consuming autoclaves. The ESENSE tool integrates a "sensor ply" for in-process defect detection and predictive maintenance, ensuring longevity. Beyond reduced upfront and running costs, ESENSE also promises a shorter processing times compared to existing autoclave methods.

The ICS is bringing together speakers from across industry and academia, alongside industry leaders, researchers, and innovators from across the composites sector, for knowledge sharing, networking and the opportunity to explore the latest advancements in composite materials internationally.

The International Composites Summit is the only UK event solely focused for professionals involved in the composites industry and you can find out more and register to attend, here.

The ESENSE project has received funding from Innovate UK under collaborative R&D programme 10023349
