We are excited to announce the launch of a new TWI-funded exploratory project, titled, ‘Effect of Outgassing on Structural Integrity of Powder Hot Isostatic Pressing Materials.’
This project, which has been funded under the TWI’s Exploratory Programme, will focus on investigating powder outgassing regimes, which is one of the key steps in near net shape powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing (NNS PM HIP) technology and usually helps in reducing the moisture content and trapped gaseous species in powder filled canisters.
Powder outgassing has a direct impact on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot isostatically pressed (HIP’d) materials. The right outgassing regime can help in producing powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressed parts with superior mechanical properties compared to wrought material. Therefore, the aim of this exploratory project is to establish the outgassing regime for various industrially-relevant powder materials, such as alloy 718 and super duplex stainless steel and to demonstrate TWI’s NNS PM HIP capabilities and expertise by manufacturing near net-shape parts similar to that shown in Figure 1.
Dr Alessandro Sergi and Dr Raja Khan, who are working on this project, are keen to promote TWI offerings in PM HIP technology to both our Industrial Members and non-Members.
Moreover, we are also developing a state-of-the-art PM HIP facility, which will help in the fabrication of large and complex high value engineering parts for various industrial sectors such as aerospace, nuclear, fusion, oil and gas, and defence.
