ISFSW Call for Papers

Wed, 30 August, 2023

We are calling for papers for the 13th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding (ISFSW) and the 3rd International Joint Symposium on Joining and Welding.

The event is taking place from 21-23 May 2024 at the International Conference Centre, Kyoto, Japan, providing an opportunity for professionals from around the world to come together to share and develop scientific and technical knowledge on friction stir welding.

This unique global forum is being held in Kyoto, Japan, which is famous for its Zen gardens, Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Juxtaposing these traditional elements are Kyoto’s universities, institutes and companies that carry out advanced research in science and technology.

The Symposium

The symposium has been sponsored and supported by the Joining and Welding Research Institute at Osaka University and will be combined with the Third International Joint Symposium on Joining and Welding.

The symposium includes three days of technical presentations alongside opportunities to network and socialise during an evening banquet of traditional Japanese food and entertainment surrounded by a beautiful Japanese garden. There will also be an industrial visit organised by our sponsor on 24 May 2024.

Call for Papers

We are now seeking papers that demonstrate clear evidence of progress in some aspect of friction stir welding (FSW) and have industrial or academic relevance. The papers must consist of work that is mostly previously unpublished and are expected to describe new developments in science, technology, applications, industrialisation, performance, quality, design or any other topic relevant to the advancement of FSW.

In order to be considered, authors need to submit an abstract of ~300 words long, showing the full title of the paper, names, affiliations, email addresses and full mailing addresses of all the authors and the requested presentation mode (oral or poster). The abstract should be in English and clearly present background, objectives, methodology and results.

Authors are expected to attend the event and present their papers themselves and the author who is to present the paper at the symposium should be clearly indicated. Each leading author may submit no more than three abstracts.

The deadline for abstract submission is 10 November 2023, a decision about submissions will be made no later than 19 January 2024 and accepted papers will be required no later than 19 April 2024.

Please be aware that visas may be required to enter Japan, which can take three months to obtain. Due to this, you are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and begin the application process early. The Symposium Organising Committee will assist in providing an official visa invitation letter for this conference.
