GeoSmart Stakeholder Event to be held in Florence

Thu, 15 June, 2023

The GeoSmart project team are due to hold the third in a series of stakeholder events on 22 June 2023 in Florence, Italy.

The event, which is being hosted by CoSviG, thanks to the contribution of the Regional Council of Tuscany, will bring together geothermal experts along with stakeholders from industry and academia to tackle the subject of, ‘Improving Flexibility of Geothermal plants: Challenges and Opportunities.’ Among those in attendance will be TWI principal project leader, Namrata Kale and group manager, Jon Blackburn.

Attendees will discuss a range of common issues, including how to increase the reach of geothermal as an alternative energy resource, the systematic expansion of scientific knowledge and expertise around geothermal, the delivery of heating and cooling solutions from geothermal, improving the efficiencies of geothermal plants, the development of standards around geothermal, incentivising geothermal use, and the use of geothermal resources for other purposes such as the extraction of CO2, lithium, silicates and the provision of residual heat. The debate will also concern topics addressed by the GeoSmart project, such as the management of high temperature and highly corrosive fluids and zero emission geothermal plants but analysed from the perspective of other EU-funded initiatives.

These issues have been gathered from a range of international stakeholders who will also use the examples of geothermal operations in Turkey, Germany, and Iceland to demonstrate how these technological solutions could be expanded and realised within the geothermal sector in Italy.

This event follows meetings held last year in Turkey and the UK to help promote geothermal solutions across Europe.

The GeoSmart project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 818576
