The Welding Institute is continuing to support the national Construction Metalwork competition.
The competition is overseen by The Welding Institute’s Association of Welding Fabrication Training and Education (AWFTE).
As part of Worldskills UK, the competition focuses on the essential requirements for a successful career as an engineering metalwork specialist. Designed to reflect the role of an advanced metal fabricator (in line with industry standards), the competition helps promote core competencies among the next generation of fabricators. Entrants to the competition are drawn from across the UK, each with a chance to reach the UK National Final at the NEC as part of Worldskills UK LIVE.
With heats already underway in Durham, Motherwell, Deeside, Barrow-in-Furness, Grimsby, Stallingsborough, Dudley, Port Talbot and Burnley, the competitors are asked to complete a range of fabrication tasks, including:
- Assembly
- Cutting
- Forming
- Joining
- Marking out
- Shaping
Among the 62 competitors this year is Kevin Crane, a welding apprentice with MGF Safety Solutions in Durham. Keen to develop his skills for a career in welding and fabrication, Kevin also recognised the competition as a great opportunity to further his professional and personal development
Other entrants include apprentices from Tata Steel, who entered the regional heats at Port Talbot steelworks, and competitors from Durham and Hartlepool who were in attendance at the New College Durham heats, and young staff from BAE Systems.
The top ten scoring fabricators from the heats will be invited to the skills show to take part in the final at the NEC in Birmingham in November 2019 as part of a 4-day event with prizes including gold, silver and bronze medals. From there, any participants who are eligible may be selected for training for squad selection to represent team Great Britain at the final of World Skills in Shanghai in 2020.
The Welding Institute are proud to continue with ongoing support for Construction Metalwork and thereby the next generation of skilled UK engineers.
