TWI is making preparations for the installation of a new TRUMPF 3D Laser System which will allow for further large-scale repair, remanufacture and additive manufacturing work.
A four-week installation plan is underway with a 4.5 metre long pit and flooring having been prepared for the laser metal deposition (LMD) system, which is unique in the marketplace.
The installation is supported by the Innovate UK funded OAAM project, which will steer the development of large-scale repair and 3D printing of aerospace parts.
TWI’s Dr Carl Hauser explains that the commissioning of this new system, coupled with some further exciting hardware commissions later this year, will enable TWI to expand its portfolio of demonstrated capability in LMD and help to achieve the ambition of being able to offer industry a UK and world-leading laser metal deposition research and certification facility.
Dr Hauser plans to post regular updates regarding the installation and commissioning of the OAAM system over the next several weeks and is looking forward to releasing some further exciting information about new LMD capability being brought to the UK soon.
