TWI representatives, Sullivan Smith and Marcello Consonni delivered a one-day event at the Confederation of Indian Industry Naoroji Godrej Centre of Excellence (CII) in Mumbai on 22 January 2019.
The event, which was attended by 41 delegates, including senior engineers, middle management and directors from the Indian Automotive sector, including OEMs and supply chain, comprised an automotive joining workshop and discussions on future collaboration.
India has adopted ambitious standards and goals for its automotive sector, which already boasts the position as the largest in the world for small car production. There is now a national policy to advance electric vehicles and eliminate internal combustion engine cars by 2030. These plans look set to grow the market for technology knowhow and projects in India.
TWI signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CII in April 2015 and have since worked together to enhance our reach and impact in India, with TWI offering training at several CII facilities. This arrangement has also secured a technology adviser position for TWI at the biannual meetings of the India Joint Economic Trade Committee (JETCO). This forum considers ways in which the industrial technology relationship between the UK and India can be progressed.
With more collaborative plans, including the creation of a TWI forum for CII Members and a potential welding conference in 2020, there is good scope for future opportunity around the growing market in India for implementing new technologies and international standards.
