Aerospace and Defence Chromates Reauthorisation Consortium

TWI would like to bring the following information to the attention of our Industrial Members in the Aerospace and Defence (A&D) sector, relating to the recently created Aerospace and Defence Chromates Reauthorisation (ADCR) Consortium. 

Chromates are substances listed in the Authorisation List (Annex XIV) of the EU REACH Regulation.  Authorisation of the continued use of these chromates in the aerospace and defence (A&D) supply chain has been applied for, but it will be necessary to re-apply to extend the review period.  These reauthorisations are the focus of the ADCR Consortium and this message. 

Seven different OEMs from Aerospace and Defence industries (the pre-consortium companies) involved in the first authorisation applications are leading the formation of this new consortium to address the above challenge.

Importantly, ADCR membership is open to all companies in all A&D supply chains, including linked derivative uses, for example, for military applications. A critical element of these re-applications will include learning lessons from the original applications, including addressing the specific expectations from the authorities for better data on conditions of use and as part of the analysis of alternatives. In addition, it means defining uses more narrowly so as to reduce uncertainty for authorities.

This means that new applications cannot be guaranteed to cover all of the A&D uses covered by the original ones unless there is effective participation and contribution of all the companies concerned.

The seven pre-consortium companies are working with a team of consultants led by RPA on the development of an authorisation strategy and the legal and administrative aspects of the consortium.  These will be presented at the ADCR inaugural meeting that is planned to take place on Friday 20th September 2019 in Brussels.
