The CSWIP Welding Inspector course is tailored for inspection engineers and supervisory staff. If you have little or no previous welding experience, it's recommended to first attend the Certificate in Visual Inspection of Welds course. This course is also available online, with approximately three days of learning materials. After completing the online package, those wishing to take the examination must attend a one-day practical training session, followed by a one-day examination at one of TWI's Training Centres, provided entry requirements are met.

 What will I learn?

This course covers the duties and responsibilities of a welding inspector, including:

  • Fusion welding processes
  • Typical weld defects
  • Types of steel (carbon-manganese, low alloy, and stainless steels)
  • Hardening of steels
  • Weldability and heat treatment
  • Parent metal defects
  • Visual inspection
  • Testing of parent metals and welds
  • Destructive and non-destructive test techniques
  • Welder and procedure approval
  • Codes and standards
  • Safe working practices

You will also have the opportunity to practice examination questions and undergo continuous and end-of-course assessments. If eligible, you can complete the relevant CSWIP examination on day five of the course.

What will I achieve?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand factors influencing the quality of fusion welds in steels
  • Recognize characteristics of common welding processes related to quality control
  • Interpret drawing instructions and symbols to meet specifications
  • Set up and report on inspections of welds, macrosections, and mechanical tests
  • Assess and report on welds to acceptance levels
  • Confirm that incoming material meets requirements and recognize the effects of deviations on weld quality
  • Be prepared to pass the Welding Inspector examinations

Additional Information

 CSWIP Welding Inspector examination: All candidates must attend a CSWIP approved training course before the examination. Enrolling in the course does not reserve an examination slot. Courses can be followed by a CSWIP Welding Inspector examination for candidates with the appropriate experience as specified in CSWIP document WI-6-92.

 Entry Requirements                             

 Minimum of three years as a Welding Inspector with duties and responsibilities outlined in Clause 1.2.2 of CSWIP document WI-6-92, under qualified supervision and independently verified, OR

Minimum of two years as a Certified Visual Welding Inspector with job responsibilities as listed in Clauses 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 of CSWIP document WI-6-92, OR

Minimum of one year as a Welding Instructor or Welding Foreman/Supervisor
