Nigar Malik Achieves Milestone in PhD Research on Environmentally-Friendly Corrosion Protection Solutions

Cambridge, UK – NSIRC PhD candidate Nigar Malik has successfully passed her doctoral viva, marking a significant milestone in her research focused on innovative solutions for corrosion protection in various industrial sectors.

Nigar's research was sponsored by the TWI Core Research Programme, and represents a significant advancement towards achieving REACH compliance in manufacturing processes, addressing regulatory concerns while promoting sustainability within the industry.

After gaining her Metallurgical and Materials Engineering degree from the University of Engineering and Technology in Pakistan, and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Queen Mary University of London, she joined the NSIRC Industrial PhD Programme in 2019. Her groundbreaking research targets the development of novel coatings and methods to replace traditional cadmium (Cd) coatings that pose environmental and health risks.

"The transition to safer and more effective corrosion protection technologies is crucial for the sustainability of many industries"

"I am excited to contribute to this vital field, ensuring innovations not only enhance performance but also protect people and the environment."

Cadmium coatings have long been employed for their exceptional corrosion protection in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and electronics. However, their toxicity and harmful effects, which include respiratory illnesses and kidney failure, have led to a pressing need for safer alternatives. Nigar’s research proposes an innovative technique for the development of coatings, focusing on zinc-nickel (Zn-Ni) alloy coatings that deliver superior corrosion resistance without the associated hazards of cadmium.

Nigar’s research demonstrates the validity of the Hull cell as an investigative tool for multi-metal systems. She has devised a digital Hull cell which allows quantitative analysis of coatings electrodeposited from single and multi-metal systems, making it a practical choice for industries.

Through precise techniques using acid electrolyte, Nigar’s Zn-Ni coatings are designed to endure the complexities of various component shapes and production costs, making them a practical choice for multiple industries. Studies indicate that Nigar’s Zn-Ni coatings offer corrosion resistance 5 to 6 times better than pure zinc coatings, showcasing promising potential for widespread application in critical sectors such as aerospace and defence. One example of their application is in the landing gears of aircraft.

Nigar's work is supported by industry experts Shiladitya Paul and Ben Robinson from TWI Ltd, alongside academic supervision from Karl Ryder at the University of Leicester. Their collaboration underscores the importance of aligning academic research with industry needs for real-world impact.

As the demand for innovative materials continues to rise, Nigar Malik’s pioneering PhD work exemplifies the future of engineering solutions—where safety, performance, and environmental responsibility and paramount.
