Adriana Castro Vargas Presents Innovative Research on Marine Coatings at the Offshore Wind Technical Program hosted by the Institute of Corrosion North East Branch (Icorr).
Adriana Castro Vargas, a PhD student and research associate at the Materials Innovation Centre, has presented research from her PhD studentship at the Institute of Corrosion 2024 Annual General Meeting and Offshore Wind Technical Programme.
The presentation focused on her study titled “Assessment of Thermal Spray Aluminium Coating in Synthetic Seawater by Using Complementary Techniques.”
This important research explores the effectiveness of thermally sprayed aluminium (TSA) coatings in simulated marine environments, which is crucial for protecting assets against corrosion in offshore wind applications.
Adriana’s work employs cutting-edge techniques, including in-situ imaging and a rotating cylinder electrode, to investigate how these coatings perform in the presence of damage (exposed steel) and how the seawater flow impacts the corrosion rate of TSA coating.
This research, not only underscores the potential of TSA coatings for the offshore wind industry but, also highlights the importance of continued innovation in materials science to tackle the challenges posed by corrosion in marine settings.
Adriana’s PhD journey is sponsored by Lloyd's Register Foundation, an independent global safety charity dedicated to fostering a safer world, in partnership with the University of Leicester.
