Welding is more than just joining materials; it is the backbone of numerous industries, from construction to oil and gas. Recognising the demand for skilled welders and the transformative impact of welding on career growth, TWI South East Asia recently conducted its flagship ‘Welding Zero to Hero’ training programme, designed to turn aspiring welders into certified professionals.
From 23rd September 2024 to 10th January 2025, this programme gathered 15 participants from two esteemed organisations: Majlis Agama Islam Kelantan (MAIK) and Majlis Agama Islam Perak (MAIPk).
The ‘Welding Zero to Hero’ programme is built around the Welder Qualification Training & Test (WQT), offering a comprehensive learning experience in welding processes, materials, and skill levels. Participants trained in advanced techniques such as:
- Arc Welding Processes: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), a combination of GTAW/SMAW, and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).
- Materials: Carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminium.
- Level 1: 1G (Flat Butt) for beginners
- Level 2: 3G (Vertical Butt) for intermediate welders
- Level 3: 6G (Inclined Pipe) for advanced professionals
The programme blended hands-on practical training with rigorous testing, ensuring participants developed both technical expertise and confidence in real-world applications.
At the heart of this initiative is the globally acclaimed CSWIP Approved Welder Certification from TWI UK. This certification is a benchmark for quality and professionalism, highly valued in industries like oil and gas, where safety and precision are paramount. Each participant was tested and certified for specific welding processes, materials, and skill levels in accordance with international standards such as ASME IX and AWS D1.1.
For the participants, the programme was not just a training course but a life-changing journey. Equipped with skills that meet international standards, they are now better positioned to secure rewarding careers and contribute to the industrial workforce.
