The EMPHASIZING Project has been featured in a special issue of the JEC Composites Magazine on ‘Composites Sustainability.’
The article was created by collaboratively by Nithin Jayasree of Brunel University London, Sofia Sampethai of TWI, and Jen Hill of B&M Longworth.
You can read about the goals of the project to recycle glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites waste into high-value, advanced materials. These materials would be priced similarly to traditional glass fibre but be greener and with properties closer to carbon fibre.
This initiative targets the £54.5 billion global composite materials market with ~30% production cost-savings, and allowing for 33% lower-weight multi-material parts/components for high-value manufacturing (automotive/aerospace/marine) sectors, whilst enableing the development of the UK's circular economy for GRPs.
You can see more about the outlined methods for the recycling process and the current progress in reclaiming and recycling glass fibres from various waste sources, including wind blades and marine waste.
Find out more about how the EMPHASIZING project is unlocking the potential for a more sustainable and circular composites economy, while also addressing environmental concerns and offering economic benefits by reading the article online, here.
